BIO

Paris based flutist Thomaz Tavares regularly performs, records, and tours with the Orchestre de Chambre Nouvelle Europe under the baton of Nicolas Krauze and is co-founder of Ensemble IMAGO, ensemble in residence at the Fondation des Etats Unis. He was a recipient of the Harriet Hale Woolley grant during which he explored the French Belle Époque repertoire and the flute music of the composer Yuko Uebayashi. He served as flute professor at the Conservatoire de Provins and as interim professor at the Conservatoire Jean-Baptiste Lully. For the 2024–25 season, he served as guest adjunct professor at Texas A&M-Commerce and guest professor at Cal State Fullerton…

The third act of “Ascanio” by Saint-Saëns unfolds during a grand celebration at Château de Fontainebleau in the time of François I. The Galerie de François I, which links the medieval castle to the Trinity Chapel and dates back to the 1500s, is not the direct setting. In 2021, @fontainebleau.schools honored its centennial with a documentary series that brought music to every corner of the château. That’s how this piece found its stage here. 🪉 : Delphine Benhamou

Sometimes, after a long recital, all we want to do is have a seat.

You know the feeling when the party is winding down, moving out of frame.

The main event is over, you’ve survived the sonatas, no major casualties,

but there’s always that perfect moment when the remaining friends gather closer,

someone brings out the good bottle.

We end up clustered around the piano until way too late,

the night refuses to die gracefully.

Old friends have run out of small talk

and finally found something good to say before exit.

You make plans for an audacious early brunch tomorrow morning

(someone has a flight)

and we all mean it

until 8 the next day,

when nobody does

Here’s a moment from one of my previous masterclasses at Cal State Fullerton- we were discussing the need of having a go to exercise for practicing your long phrases with a very small thin airstream, and this is my personal favorite!

OF COURSE you can learn circular breathing, but make it a plus, not a necessity.

Have you ever met someone really good looking and then they open their mouths and you say “oh, never mind” ?

Beauty, it turns out, really can be only skin deep.

A similar illusion exists in the world of woodwinds. The cult of “tone” has become a minor religion. The sacred texts are recited at every gathering: “Lead with tone.” “Tone is your greeting card.” “Best sound on every note.” But let’s not mistake ritual for meaning.

I wasted countless hours on the seductive belief that if I could achieve the resonance and apply it like a paste to every scale and arpeggio, then the music would reveal itself.

Dear tone addict, I get it.

“Tone is your greeting card,” right? But what happens when that greeting card gets lost in the mail? Or when a rogue baguette rips your lip open ?(that’s what happened to me this evening) Or when you’re dealing with dry lips, congestion, or just an off day?
If “good tone” is the only ticket to beautiful music, where does that leave Dylan, Piaf, Armstrong, Joplin, or Holiday? Do we really believe you need a perfect voice to say something meaningful?

The pedagogy of “best sound on every note” ( while well-meaning) often means spending your life addicted to warmups and tone, instead of chasing ideas, phrasing, and your own interpretation.

So here’s to always being more in love with the music in your head than how you actually sound 🥂

“Renowned flute virtuoso Jean-Pierre Rampal learned about the sonata in a phone call from Poulenc not long after the commission. According to Rampal’s autobiography that is quoted in the preface of the sonata, “`Jean-Pierre,’ said Poulenc, ‘you know you’ve always wanted me to write a sonata for flute and piano? Well, I’m going to,’ he said. ‘And the best thing is that the Americans will pay for it!’”.

Rampal and Poulenc would perform the world premiere of the sonata at the Strasbourg Festival on June 18, 1957. The audience was so appreciative that the duo had to play the second movement twice! The unofficial premiere took place the previous day before an audience of one: composer Arthur Rubinstein. According to Rampal, “The applause we received from him was as memorable as at any concert I have played.” Poulenc also performed the English premiere on January 16, 1958, with renowned English flutist Gareth Morris. The American premiere took place in the Coolidge Auditorium at the Library of Congress on February 14, 1958, with Rampal and pianist Robert Veyron-Lacroix performing. In 1998, Rampal performed the sonata again at the Library of Congress, in a concert celebrating the 40th anniversary of the American premiere and the 100th anniversary of the Music Division.

The work became immensely popular, and was later orchestrated. In 1976, the flautist James Galway asked the English composer Sir Lennox Berkeley, a good friend of Poulenc’s for many years, to orchestrate the sonata. This proved to be quite the challenge, as Berkeley wrote in his diary, “The task of orchestrating Poulenc’s Flute Sonata … proves as difficult as I had feared. The difficulty is the entirely pianistic nature of the accompaniment, extremely difficult to translate into orchestral terms.” Berkeley paid tribute to Poulenc’s genius with a carefully and faithfully crafted orchestration that became as popular as Poulenc’s original.” - Brian McCurdy

If I had to choose one piece to play for the rest of my life, it would be this one, every time.

And every single time, I would take a risk in this specific section. Trying to find just the right color, sometimes cracking ( who am I kidding, most of the time cracking) but striving towards something I can’t quite grasp.

And no, I will never apologize for playing the Rampal edition instead of the “scholarly” ones with the orchestral arrangement. You can pry that main melody from my cold dead hands.
